Beneath the seemingly stable surface of the landscape, traces of conflicts and transformations accumulate, shaping both its material reality and the narratives we construct around it. Archaeological remains, historical images, and transmitted accounts are fragments of an incomplete memory, whose interpretation requires establishing connections between what remains and what has disappeared.
SÍSIFO. c/a/r/tographic Splits takes the myth as a starting point to explore these relationships through artistic research and creation. The repetition and effort involved in pushing the stone invite us to consider how societies continuously reconstruct their own narratives. Each return to memory introduces new perspectives and opens up possibilities of meaning around what came before us.
Almedinilla is presented as a site of inquiry in which traces of the past can be interpreted through different visual narratives. The archaeologies of conflict provide a point of departure for thinking about heritage beyond its condition as a material vestige, also attending to the images, absences, and fictions that intervene in its interpretation.
The works brought together here emerge from different artistic research projects developed from an a/r/tographic perspective. Although each follows its own trajectory, they share a reflection on memory and the construction of narratives. Archival images, video, and generative imagery are some of the tools employed in this exhibition to explore the cartographies of conflict. The works function as splits of the same conceptual territory, where individual experiences intersect and generate unexpected relationships. Creation is conceived as an audiovisual essay that interrogates heritage and the past from the perspective of the present.
Within this process, generative technologies expand the possibilities for intervening in archives and cultural imaginaries. Their incorporation responds to a desire to explore the tensions that arise when a constructed image acquires a documentary appearance, raising new questions about the credibility of images and our relationship with what we regard as collective memory.
Perhaps Sisyphus’s task also consists in discovering, with each return, a different way of looking at the world.
