PONENCIA/TALK
02/04/2025
Of Light, Gestures, and Apparatuses:
Explorations in Spatial Montage
This talk approaches cinema from an expanded perspective, exploring how montage takes place not only through the succession of images, but also in space, the body, and the performativity of the cinematic apparatus. Drawing on works such as We Only Guarantee The Dinosaurs, Things Said Once, Trágame nube, and Loose Ends/Cabos sueltos, as well as my research in Paracinema. I will examine the relationship between projection, gesture, and presence, positioning cinema beyond the screen and at the intersection of materiality and dematerialization.
From Lettrist orality to Mallarmé’s notion of the constellation, the talk examines how cinema can exist in a state of latency, becoming activated through narration, light, and performative action. Through examples from my practice and theoretical research, I will trace a trajectory through speculative montage, cinema in reserve, and the reconfiguration of the cinematic apparatus as a living, mutable assemblage.
