Memory and the Distortion of Memory: Ghost Stories—Those Who Exist and Those Who No Longer Exist—in Documentary Narratives
Documentary films are constructed from fragments of reality, filtered through the author’s gaze, framed by a lens that excludes more than it includes, ordered and disordered in the editing room. Documentaries are constructions whose foundations are sunk into the shifting sands across which the territories of memory expand.
Memory—and it is what we are made of—is a constant distortion of reality. It is an artifice that projects lives and events that happened and those that never happened, blending them together without distinction, as though beneath a diaphanous veil of fantasy.
We turn to memory in search of our own ghosts—and those of others—who walk alongside our existence and whisper stories into our ears. And as we travel that path, we continue to listen to the ghosts who exist even though we cannot see them, and to those who no longer exist but refuse to leave us.
